What is the oldest tree in Trainiškis?
A young oak planted in 2017 beside the fallen trunk of the original Trainiškis Oak, one of Lithuania's oldest known trees before it fell in a 2016 windstorm at an estimated 800 years. The new tree is a genetic clone, grafted from the original at a nursery, but is still young: expect a sapling, not a giant.
The original Trainiškis Oak stood for an estimated 800 years, one of the oldest known trees in Lithuania, protected since 1960, until it fell in a windstorm on the night of 5 October 2016. It was formally removed from the state register of protected objects the following year. This site now maps its honest successor rather than the vanished tree. On 12 May 2017, Aukštaitija National Park and neighbouring Labanoras Regional Park authorities held a public planting ceremony beside the fallen trunk: a young oak grown at the Kėdainiai nursery from a graft of the original, genetically its clone though grown on separate rootstock. As of 2026 it remains a young tree, nowhere near the size or presence of the giant it replaces, and this page describes it as what it is rather than borrowing the original's measurements. Park officials deliberately left the fallen original trunk in place rather than clearing it, citing its value for biodiversity: it now hosts a rare fungus, kurapkinis storplutis. Visitors see both, the fallen giant and its young clone standing beside it, within Aukštaitija National Park.
