The Cypress of Kolombatović

How do I find it? You can recognise it as the cypress standing taller than the pines around it on the Kolombatovic promenade, planted there in 1908.

The cypress on Marjan's Kolombatović walkway went into the ground in 1908, the same year the man it honors died. Juraj Kolombatović was a Split zoologist who spent much of his career naming fish nobody else had described, and in 1903 he became founding president of the Marjan Society, the group that turned decades of scattered tree planting on the barren hill above the city into an organized, permanent effort. Aleppo pines had gone in as early as 1852, but Marjan stayed a patchy, half wild slope until Kolombatović's generation gave its reforestation an institution to answer to. When he died, the society planted a Mediterranean cypress in his memory, and the promenade running past it now carries his name, Kolombatovićevo šetalište, the same path that leads to Split's zoo and natural history museum today. More than a century on, the cypress stands taller than most of the pines planted decades before it, on a hill that is now one continuous forest instead of the bare outcrop Kolombatović's own contemporaries described. It is the one tree on Marjan with a name attached to a specific act of memory rather than a species list.
