The black walnut growing in Đardin, Split's 19th-century public garden by the Golden Gate, is not a Mediterranean tree at all. Juglans nigra is native to eastern North America, and Split's own botanical survey lists it as a Category II rarity precisely because it is almost never seen this far south on the Adriatic, a temperate forest species making an unlikely living among the palms, planes and pines the city's actual climate can support. Nobody has recorded when it went in or who planted it, only that it survived long enough, and improbably enough, to earn a rarity grade alongside the garden's more famous ginkgo. Đardin itself dates to 1859, when the ground between two former Venetian bastions became the city's main public garden, decades after French forces first cleared the fortification wall in 1808, so the walnut has had, at most, a century and a half to establish itself as one of only a handful of its kind on this stretch of coast. It stands without a plaque, its rarity administrative rather than advertised, recorded in a municipal botanical assessment rather than on any sign a visitor would actually see walking past it.

The pin marks the right spot roughly, not the tree itself. It stands here, but we have not confirmed the precise position on the ground yet. Know exactly where it is?
