This sycamore maple grows on Janskamperstraat in Geleen, banded by the national register to a planting around 1910, roughly 120 years old. Sycamore is one of the faster-growing large maples planted across the Netherlands through the early twentieth century, valued for tolerating wind, salt and poor soil better than most other broadleaf trees, which made it a common choice for streets and windbreaks in industrial and mining towns like Geleen was becoming through this period. At 120 years a sycamore has usually reached close to its mature size, with the broad, five-lobed leaves and winged seed pairs, the helicopters children collect every autumn, that the species produces in quantity. Its bark develops a distinctive scaly, plated pattern with age, flaking in irregular patches that can make an old sycamore look almost as textured as a plane tree from a distance. The register records nothing about this specific tree's history beyond species and decade, which is ordinary for a street tree whose interest is simply having outlasted whatever else stood on the street around it. The pin marks the right spot roughly, not the tree itself. It stands here, but we have not confirmed the precise position on the ground yet. Know exactly where it is?
