The Ash of Jardin d'Isabelle

This European ash shares the Jardin d'Isabelle with the copper beech the register also lists nearby, banded to the same decade, a planting around 1870 and roughly 160 years old. Ash dieback, the fungal disease that has killed a large share of the Netherlands' ash population since around 2010, makes every surviving ash this age worth noting: a tree that has stood for a century and a half in a garden setting and made it through more than a decade of a disease that has taken down ash trees far younger. Ash is among the last trees in a Dutch garden to come into leaf each spring and among the first to drop in autumn, leaving it bare for more than half the year, and its matt black, hoof-shaped buds are one of the easiest ways to identify it through the winter months when nothing else here carries them. The register gives no history of the tree itself beyond species and decade, unlike its beech neighbour a few steps away, which carries an actual anecdote attached to the garden.
