What is the oldest tree in Sanremo?

Nobody has published a reliable age for Sanremo's listed palms; the city's own garden guide dates the Senegal palms of Villa Ormond to 1974 to 1980, so size here is not age. The oldest documented tree nearby is the Moreton Bay fig at the gate of the Museo Bicknell in Bordighera, which the Clarence Bicknell Association says Bicknell planted in 1886.

All three Sanremo trees on the national list stand near the seafront, about two kilometres apart from end to end, so one walk takes them in. Start in the west at the Parco Marsaglia, the garden left from the Marsaglia family's villa off the Corso Imperatrice, where the Chilean wine palm stands among other palms. Walk about a kilometre east to the Zampillo fountain on Corso Orazio Raimondo, in the centre of town, for the stand of California fan palms. Another kilometre east along Corso Cavallotti brings you to the small Giardini Nobel, opposite Villa Ormond, and the Senegal date palm with its many trunks. All three are free to see, in public parks or street space. Bordighera, one short regional train ride west, makes a second walk of about a kilometre from its station: the two Moreton Bay figs at the Museo Bicknell on Via Romana, the 40-metre Canary pine at the corner of Via Tumiati, and the Scibretta fig beside the town hall. None of the three Bordighera trees charges entry either.
