ND Nr. 31 Oak north of the Nummernweiher, Dutzendteich

SpeciesPedunculate Oak

Approximate location.

Of the three protected oaks along the Nummernweiher in Nuremberg's Volkspark Dutzendteich, number 31 is the one that stands back from the water. Its official name places it by two edges at once: north of the pond, south of Jakob-Wolff-Strasse. Somewhere in that strip of park between the shore path and the street is an oak the state of Bavaria has decided must not be cut down. The register says little else. It calls the tree Eiche, oak, with no species, no girth, no height and no age. A photographer who stood beside it in August 2017 filed it as a pedunculate oak, Quercus robur, and that photograph is the most recent record we have of it. Bavaria's register still lists it as current, but nobody has put a fresh date on it since that summer, so if you have seen it lately, tell us it is still there. Where exactly it stands is a matter of about twenty metres. The register and the German Wikipedia list of the city's natural monuments give coordinates that far apart, so our pin is approximate. The other two oaks make it an easy detour. Number 34 stands on the north shore of the eastern pond, and number 33 grows in the footpath a little further east. If you measure this one round the trunk at chest height, tell us the number.

The line is our estimate of how much there is to see, not a measurement. Typical for this species where this tree stands; exact weeks shift with the year.

Volkspark Dutzendteich, north of the Nummernweiher, south of Jakob-Wolff-Strasse, NurembergYou can recognise it as the oak in the strip of park between the Nummernweiher and Jakob-Wolff-Strasse, back from the water. The oak on the lawn by the flats at Jakob-Wolff-Strasse 19 to 23 is a different one.

Free. Public city park, open all hours; the tree stands between the lake and Jakob-Wolff-Strasse.

Tram 4 terminus or S-Bahn Dutzendteich, roughly 10 minutes on foot (estimate)
