Wat is de oudste boom van Osaka?

The oldest tree in Osaka is the Sennen-kusu, a camphor tree at Nankunsha shrine within Sumiyoshi Taisha, estimated at around 1,000 years old. Its trunk measures nearly ten metres around, and Osaka City lists it as a protected tree.

Osaka's claim to its oldest tree has real competition. Achihayao Shrine's camphor in Tsurumi Ward carries the same traditional age, close to 1,000 years, and its Osaka Prefecture natural monument designation, dating to 1970, is older and more formally documented than anything covering the Sennen-kusu. But that tree lost most of its main trunk to a lightning strike sometime in the Taisho era, and what stands today grew back from the surviving third with a tree doctor's help, a genuine recovery story but a complicated one to call simply the oldest. The Sennen-kusu at Sumiyoshi Taisha's Nankunsha shrine carries no such asterisk: a single, undamaged trunk nearly ten metres around, an Osaka City preserved-tree designation, and a consistent age estimate across independent sources. It also anchors hattatsu-mairi, a four-year pilgrimage cycle in which worshippers collect 48 small cat charms at its base, which makes it one of the most visited individual trees in the city even though its age is rarely the reason people show up. Getting there: Sumiyoshitaisha Station on the Nankai Main Line, three minutes on foot, or the Sumiyoshi-Torii-mae tram stop right at the gate.
