The Lime of Gottesackerstraße, Dachau

This lime was protected as an inn's courtyard tree, and the inn has moved on without it. The county list that made it a natural monument places it in the courtyard of the Unterbräu on Augsburger Straße. A successor inn now trades there, and it no longer runs that yard, so today the tree stands at a street corner rather than in a guest garden. The same list puts its age at about 140 years. It does not say when that figure was set or how, so read it loosely, somewhere between 120 and 160 years. Even at the low end it was in the ground before the First World War, a few steps off the main street of Dachau's old town, and it has stood there through every chapter of the town's twentieth century since. The register calls it simply Linde, a lime, without naming which one. If you can tell a small-leaved from a large-leaved lime by the leaf, tell us. Look for it at the corner of Gottesackerstraße and Färbergasse. Two separate map points for the tree agree to within about 11 metres. We have not seen where the old courtyard's fence runs today, so treat the corner as your viewpoint. No girth or height has been published. Dachau is about 16 km north-west of central Munich: roughly 25 minutes on the S2, then a kilometre on foot from the station.
