The Clipped Lime Walk of the Dachau Palace Garden
Approximate location.
This is not one tree but a walk of limes clipped into a green tunnel, and by the county's estimate the limes are about 290 years old. The Landkreis Dachau protects it as a single natural monument, a geschnittener Lindenlaubengang, a clipped lime arbour, in the Hofgarten of Schloss Dachau. That makes it a different kind of old. A lime left alone grows into a tall, rounded crown. These have been cut back and trained into a covered walk you can stand inside. If the county's figure holds, the limes went into the ground around the 1730s, and today they are held to a shape rather than left to grow. The estimate comes without a date or a method, so treat it as a band of roughly 250 to 320 years. The list calls the trees only Linde, lime, and does not say which kind. If you can tell from the leaves, tell us, and the same goes for a trunk measurement. The pin marks the palace garden rather than a particular trunk, but a covered lime walk is not something you will miss once you are inside. The garden is public; check its opening hours before you go. Schloss Dachau stands on the hill above the old town, roughly 1.5 km from Dachau station with a climb at the end, and the S2 reaches Dachau from central Munich in about 25 minutes.
Hofgarten of Dachau Palace (Schloss Dachau), 85221 DachauYou can recognise it by its shape: limes clipped and trained into a covered arbour walk, not free-standing crowns. It stands in the Hofgarten of Schloss Dachau, on the hill above the old town.
Free, in the public palace garden (Hofgarten) of Schloss Dachau; check the garden's opening hours on arrival
