The Giant Rubber Tree of MourariaUrban curiosity

Nobody knows how this tree got here, and that is most of its appeal. A rubber fig now towers some six metres over a narrow street in Mouraria, its roots having escaped a cracked pot years ago and driven straight into the ground below, its trunk and branches now filling the gap between two building facades on Rua de São Cristóvão as though it had been planted there on purpose. It was not. Plant researchers who have examined it, including the botanist André Mota, can confirm the species and describe its improvised growth, but not its origin story. Unlike the classified trees of public interest elsewhere on this list, this one carries no official age, no protected status and no municipal plaque, just several hundred enthusiastic online reviews and a café that opened next door in 2022 partly because of the foot traffic the tree now draws. It is the youngest and least official entry here, almost certainly under 40 years old, included not for its age but for the fact that a potted houseplant broke loose and quietly became one of the most photographed trees in the neighbourhood.
