The Southern Catalpa of Julianastraat

Only one source names this tree, and it is honest about not being sure of everything either. The national monumental tree register lists a Catalpa on Julianastraat, planted sometime in the 1900s, but gives no house number for it and marks its own visibility field unknown. The city's separate street-tree management inventory, which independently confirmed three of this cluster's other trees to within a few metres, has no Catalpa recorded anywhere near this point at all. That gap does not mean the tree is wrong, only that it is unconfirmed a second way, which is the honest way to leave it rather than a reason to leave it out. A Catalpa bignonioides at roughly 120 years old would be a distinctive planting for this corner of the Villapark garden suburb, laid out from 1907 with deliberately varied ornamental species along its verges: broad heart-shaped leaves, white orchid-like flowers in early summer, and long thin seed pods that hang on through winter and give the tree its old nickname, the cigar tree.
