What is the oldest tree in Eindhoven?
The oldest tree in Eindhoven is probably De Gevlekte Zuiderling, the plane at Groendomein Wasven. The Wereldboom foundation that named it puts it at around 1760, about 265 years, while the national register of monumental trees gives a planting band of 1820 to 1830, roughly 200 years. Both cannot be right, and neither figure has been cored, so the age is a range rather than a date. It is also a survivor: it was set on fire in July 2022 and grafted back to life. A copper beech in the Glorieuxpark once held the title on a 1700 to 1750 register band, but the register now records that tree as dead or felled, so it is no longer on this list.
Every age on this page comes from the Landelijk Register Monumentale Bomen, which records a planting decade rather than a year, so ages here are bands and are not narrowed to look precise. That register is the 2024 edition and is a single source for most of these trees, which is why several are flagged. Where a second source exists it is named in the story, and the two trees with the most reporting behind them are the Philips chestnut at the stadium and the plane at Wasven. That plane is the one to watch: it was set on fire in July 2022 and arborists gave it a thirty percent chance of pulling through, so if you walk out there and find it has not made it, tell us and we will take it down the same day.
