What is the oldest tree in Bošáca?
Bošáca's oldest documented tree is the Pink Pear of Zabudišová, a heirloom variety estimated at roughly 200 years old and Slovakia's 2015 Tree of the Year; the heirloom apple growing 350 metres away is younger, about 130 years old and the 2017 champion, and the Wild Pear of Lysica Hill, about 150 years old and the 2024 champion, is younger still.
The apple and the older pear grow in Zabudišová, a hillside hamlet of Bošáca in western Slovakia, and all three trees here are national tree champions. The pear, Bošácka ružová, is a pink-fleshed variety that won Slovakia's Strom roka title in 2015, then placed third at the European final, its age given as around 200 years by two independent Slovak outlets; local tradition ties it to the area's first settlers, known for making fruit brandy from orchards like this one. The apple carries the rare local variety Citrónové zimné Zabudišovské, planted an estimated 130 years ago, and won the same contest in 2017, placing sixth in Europe; its girth was measured at 251 centimetres. Four kilometres away, on the slope at the foot of Lysica Hill, a wild pear grew from a stray seed; it won the 2024 title and placed fifth in Europe in 2025, its trunk 195 centimetres round. All three stand on open ground with no gate or ticket, roughly 15 minutes by car from Nové Mesto nad Váhom.
