Arnhem's national tree register keeps two grounds for protecting a tree, being old or being rare, and this weeping pagoda tree qualifies on the second alone. Nobody has recorded when it went into the ground; the council's own file says simply unknown. The shape gives away what it is: Styphnolobium japonicum 'Pendula', a grafted, deliberately weeping form of the Japanese pagoda tree, its branches trained to cascade rather than reach, so that in summer the white, faintly honey-scented flowers hang close enough to brush a passer-by's shoulder instead of drifting overhead. It stands directly in front of Musis Sacrum, Arnhem's concert hall since 1847, on the roadside edge of the Velperplein rather than tucked into the park behind it, which is presumably why the register lists its setting as street rather than garden. Municipal survey work puts its planting band at 1900 to 1910, two or three generations after the concert hall itself went up. No ticket, no gate: it stands on open pavement outside a building that still hosts Arnhem's own orchestra. Nobody has published an independent account of this specific tree beyond the national register, so treat the date as the council's best estimate rather than a settled fact.
