Warsaw's register of natural monuments gives this oak a first name. Karol is a pedunculate oak of 24 metres, and it is not a park tree: it grows on the pavement of ul. Popiełuszki in Żoliborz, four or five kilometres north of the centre. The state protected it on 22 October 1982, registered on its own rather than as one of a group, which means the monument is this single tree and nothing around it. More than forty years later it is still standing on the same stretch of pavement. Get the address right when you go. Number 15 holds two protected oaks. The public nursery at that address has its own, entered in the register separately and never given a name, so the pair are easy to mix up on the ground. Karol is the one with the name; its neighbour carries only a code. The height is on record and almost nothing else is. No published source we could find gives a girth or an age, which for a named oak on a Warsaw street is a strange gap.
