This black poplar is a protected natural monument, and almost everything else about it is a blank. The city's register lists a Schwarzpappel on Haidestraße in Simmering and, in the data we hold, gives it no number, no date and no reason. It is missing from the German Wikipedia list of Simmering's monuments, which is where we found the designation texts for most of Vienna's other protected trees. What we do have is the city's tree inventory, which records a black poplar 3.69 metres round at exactly the register's point. That is a heavy trunk for the species, and still well short of the 5.95 metre black poplar on the Hafenzufahrtsstraße, about two kilometres to the north and also on this page. If you have an afternoon in the east of the city, the two make a pair. We cannot tell you when this one was protected or how old it is, and we would rather say so than guess. Black poplars grow fast and do not live long, which makes a protected one in a working district worth seeing while it lasts. We have found no photograph of it at all; the inventory, which is current city data, is our evidence that it still stands. It is a street tree, seen from the pavement. If you go, a photograph is the most useful thing you could send us, and if you know when or why the city protected it, tell us that too.

The line is our estimate of how much there is to see, not a measurement. Typical for this species where this tree stands; exact weeks shift with the year.
Haidestraße, Simmering (11th district)You can recognise it by the trunk, about 3.7 metres round, a black poplar standing as a street tree. It stands on Haidestraße in Simmering, right at our pin, which comes from the city's own tree inventory.
