The Wernhalde Giant Sequoias
Approximate location.
Two giant sequoias stand about ten metres apart between the houses of Steinkopfstraße, and Stuttgart protects each one under its own number. The trees at number 6 and number 8 were made natural monuments in June 2003; we list them as one stop, because you will see them together. Sequoias are something of a Stuttgart habit. A local walking writer traces many of the ones in the city and across Württemberg to King Wilhelm I, who bought a pound of seed in 1864, and describes the sequoias in the Wernhaldenpark next door as reaching sizes unbelievable for Württemberg. Whether these two grew from that pound of seed, nobody has recorded. Their planting date is not documented, and we are not going to borrow the king's year for them. If you know when they went in, tell us. The official register is the only source that names these two individually, and it gives no girth or height. A photograph from April 2018 shows a tall, healthy conifer behind a roadside rail, with houses beside it. Be clear about access. They stand between houses on ground no source describes, so these are trees to look at from the street and footpath, not to walk up to, and the pin is the register's approximate point. For sequoias you can stand under, the public Wernhaldenpark next door has many more on its steep paths, along with a young planting from 1990 not to be mistaken for the old ones.
This tree looks much the same in every month of the year, so there is no season to chart.
Steinkopfstrasse 6 and 8, beside the Wernhaldenpark, StuttgartYou can recognise them as the two giant sequoias about ten metres apart between the houses at Steinkopfstraße 6 and 8. You see them from the street over a fence, beside the Wernhaldenpark.
View-only from the public street and footpath beside Steinkopfstrasse (visible over a fence in the Commons photo); the tree itself stands between houses and its plot status is not stated by any source. The Wernhaldenpark next door is public, with five entrances, steep paths and many more sequoias.
Stadtbahn U5/U6 to Weinsteige, then about 10 minutes down Roemerstrasse into the park (per stuttgartwege blog route; time estimated)
