Roots drop from high in this Moreton Bay fig's crown and run down its trunk, fused and braided over one another until the stem looks more like a bundle of roots than a single trunk, then spread over the ground at its foot in thick, mossy buttresses. The species comes from the rainforests of eastern Australia. This one grows in Parque da Liberdade, Sintra's municipal park, about thirty metres from the town's giant plane tree. A nature guide who lives in Sintra and leads seasonal walks among the town's trees sent it to us in November 2026, with the photograph on this page and the spot where it stands. That is the whole of its written record so far: we found no register entry, no measurement and no planting date, so this page makes no claim about its age. What the photograph does show is the braided base, a tangle of roots holding up the trunk, and a crown of large, leathery leaves above the path. If you know when it was planted, or how big it is around, tell us.
