The Viscote of the Paseo de Colón

Most people walking the Paseo de Colón toward the Maestranza bullring have never heard of this tree's species, and that is most of the reason it made Seville's list of singular trees. Parasenegalia visco, still filed by its older name Acacia visco in some sources, is South American, native to the dry forests of Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay, and it is rarely planted anywhere in Europe outside a handful of specimen collections. The city's 2022 survey found it physiologically and biologically clean, with a structure it rated compromised but still standing, overall condition good, girth 1.75 metres at chest height and a crown 13.4 metres across, wide for a tree only 12.3 metres tall. The species carries fine, feathery bipinnate leaves and clusters of small pale flowers, closer in appearance to its more familiar acacia relatives than its unfamiliar name suggests. It stands on the riverside promenade directly across from the Real Maestranza, one of Spain's most famous bullrings, a rare tree in plain view of one of the city's best known buildings.
