The Fig of the Jardines de Chapina

This fig grows two trunks from one root system, 2.10 and 1.97 metres round, and Seville's 2022 survey rated its condition optimal on every measure it took: physiology, structure and plant health all clean, the best possible mark a tree on this list can earn. It stands in the Jardines de Chapina, a strip of garden along the historic course of the Guadalquivir canal on the Triana side of the river, about 500 metres from a second Ficus microcarpa this site already publishes at El Altozano. Indian laurel fig is native across a wide arc from India to northern Australia, and it is one of the most widely planted street and park trees in warm cities worldwide precisely because it tolerates pruning, pollution and root competition better than almost anything else, developing the dense, glossy-leaved crown and pale aerial roots that make old specimens look far larger than a single trunk would suggest. Two Ficus microcarpa within an easy walk of each other, on opposite ends of the same riverside district, make a small Triana walk worth doing back to back if you visit one.
