The Plane of Quinta da Macieirinha

A house dedicated to a dead king's exile keeps its own protected tree in the garden outside. The London plane at Quinta da Macieirinha, a manor house inside the Palácio de Cristal park grounds now serving as Porto's Museu Romântico, is under formal review for protection as a tree of public interest alongside the palace's more famous specimens across the park. The museum inside commemorates Charles Albert of Sardinia, the abdicated King of Sardinia-Piedmont who spent the final months of his life at this house in 1849, having lost his throne after a failed war against Austria. The plane tree predates that story by decades, part of the working quinta's original planting before its owners ever imagined a deposed Italian monarch would die inside. London planes were a standard choice for 19th-century Portuguese gardens, valued for fast growth, tolerance of hard pruning, and mottled, flaking bark that sheds pollution along with old skin, part of why the species still lines so many European boulevards today. This one has grown alongside the house through its transformation from private residence to royal deathbed to public museum, three very different identities for the same modest patch of ground.
