Ancient Trees in Margaret Island
Three of these trees are older than the park they stand in.
Margaret Island was laid out as a landscape park under Archduke Joseph in the nineteenth century, and a pedunculate oak, a yew and a black walnut on the higher ground are older than that work: remnants of the oak, ash and elm floodplain forest that covered the island before anybody designed anything. The fourth is the one he planted himself. Joseph put a plane tree in the ground here in 1823, two years before the Hungarian Academy of Sciences was founded across the water, and the near-coincidence of dates is where its modern name comes from. The ages are FŐKERT's, from the city parks company's own 2020 dendrological survey of the island. All five stand on open public parkland, free, and the island is a twenty-minute walk end to end.
