Bristol's oldest tree is the Domesday Oak in Ashton Court Estate, estimated at around 700 years old and named for the estate's mention in the 1086 Domesday Book. Its trunk has partially collapsed and is now held together with timber struts and wire, but it is still alive, one of Britain's 50 Great Trees named by the Tree Council in 2002. It stands free to visit in Ashton Court, a short bus ride from central Bristol.
Ashton Court was a private deer park for centuries before Bristol City Council bought it in 1959 and opened it to the public. Its oldest surviving oak, thought to be around 700 years old, takes its name from the estate's own appearance in the Domesday Book of 1086, the survey William the Conqueror ordered of his new kingdom; the Tree Council believes the tree was already growing around the time that record was made. In 2002, to mark the Queen's golden jubilee, the Tree Council selected it as one of 50 Great British Trees. Its trunk has since partially collapsed, split and settled toward the ground, and is now held upright with timber struts and steel wire rather than its own structural strength alone. Visitors who knew the tree decades ago describe climbing inside a healthier, more intact trunk; today's is thinner in the canopy and visibly declining, though still producing leaves each year. It stands, easy to miss without signage, among Ashton Court's wider population of ancient pollard oaks, more than a hundred of them, the largest such cluster in Britain outside Windsor Great Park.
