Belgrade's park authority has protected it continuously since 1980, reconfirmed in a 2001 review, on the strength of a genuinely old and genuinely singular fact: the oak and ash woodland that once covered much of the Vračar district was cleared for streets and a marketplace in the early 19th century, and this is the one tree from that vanished forest still standing. Every other candidate for Belgrade's oldest tree trails it by a documented margin. The plane tree at Topčider, often cited as the city's most impressive, is younger by several decades even under its most generous dating, and its planting date is itself disputed by up to 36 years depending on the source. The two yews at Belgrade Cathedral and the protected grouping in Zemun's park are all closer to a century old than two. So while none of Belgrade's four protected trees has a precisely documented planting year, the Cvetni trg oak's two-century estimate, and its unmatched position as the sole survivor of an entire vanished ecosystem, put it clearly ahead of the rest.
