The Lime of the Nepomuk Chapel, Grünwald

Agenot documented
SpeciesSmall-leaved Lime

The officials who protect this lime do not agree on which lime it is. The Landkreis München made it a natural monument by an ordinance of 22 February 1982, and the published list of the district's monuments calls it a Winterlinde, a small-leaved lime. The Bavarian state register, at the same spot by the chapel, names it a Sommerlinde, a large-leaved lime. The photographer who documented it in 2021 sided with the small-leaved reading, and so do we, but the dispute is real and still open. What nobody disputes is where it stands. It grows on the street Auf der Eierwiese, directly beside the little chapel of St. John of Nepomuk, and its crown rises well over the chapel roof. Three separate coordinates, from the register, the list and geotagged photographs, land within a few metres of each other here. You can settle the species yourself. A small-leaved lime has smaller, neater leaves and flowers in July; a large-leaved lime flowers a few weeks earlier, in June. Stand under it in early summer and the timing tells you. If you know it already, tell us which one it is. No age, girth or height has been published for it either, so a measurement would be just as welcome. The chapel is in Grünwald, about 12 km south of central Munich: a suburban trip on tram 25 from the centre, then on foot from the stop.

The line is our estimate of how much there is to see, not a measurement. Typical for this species where this tree stands; exact weeks shift with the year.

Auf der Eierwiese, next to the St.-Johann-von-Nepomuk-Kapelle, 82031 Grünwald You can recognise it by its broad crown towering over the roof of the small white Nepomuk chapel. It stands right beside the chapel on the street Auf der Eierwiese, the one large lime there.

Free, a roadside tree on the public street Auf der Eierwiese beside the chapel; viewable from the pavement.

Grünwald is outside Munich city; tram 25 runs from central Munich to Grünwald. Walk from the terminus to the chapel not measured; travel time from the centre roughly 35 to 45 minutes, not verified.
