What is the oldest tree in Logan, Ohio?
The oldest tree in Logan is the Great White Oak, a white oak of roughly 600 years on the northeast corner of Old Logan Cemetery, near the junction of Keynes Drive and North Mulberry Street. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources checked its age about thirty years ago, but the method was never recorded, so the honest range is 500 to 650 years. It is free, on public cemetery ground, and easy to pick out: it is the largest thing standing there by a wide margin.
Logan is in Hocking County, about an hour southeast of Columbus, and no public transport reaches the tree. You drive, and you park at Old Logan Cemetery on the north side of town. The oak is on the northeast corner, near where Keynes Drive meets North Mulberry Street. The cemetery is public ground with no gate and no charge, and visitors who behave as one behaves in a cemetery are welcome. What is there is one white oak, not a collection. An Ohio naturalist spent an hour photographing it in 2019 and called it easily the largest and most ornate white oak he had seen, which is the fair description: huge gnarled limbs going out sideways, the frame an oak only builds with room and several centuries. Autumn is the moment to plan for. The acorns drop in September and October and the Tree Commission collects them, grows them on and sells the saplings.
