Krakow's monumental trees are almost all native oaks and limes, which makes this one an outlier twice over: a Northern Red Oak, a North American species, growing in the garden of a public library. The building itself has its own history worth knowing before the tree. Built as a villa in the late 1880s and once purchased for the painter Jan Matejko's daughter Beata, it has served as Podgorze district's public library since 1988, which is what keeps its garden open rather than walled off as someone's private grounds. The oak's trunk measures three metres fourteen around, big enough that Poland's national register protects it as a natural monument, though the register itself carries no age. Its protection date is recorded two ways, 1987 in the national database and 1997 in the city's own list, likely the gap between an original designation and a later province-wide reconfirmation rather than a real dispute. A honey locust stands twelve metres away in the same garden, registered alongside it under the same library grounds. No age has been established for either, and an introduced ornamental species like this one has no reliable local growth rate to estimate from. If you know one, tell us.
