The Morawskiego Elm

At 399 centimetres round, this is the thickest elm on this list, and the two sources describing it cannot agree on when Poland decided to protect it. The national register says 1987. The city's own published list says 1997. Both quote the same register number and the same girth to the centimetre, so this is one tree wearing two dates, and the decade between them is a slip in somebody's transcription rather than a question about which elm is meant. It is a European white elm at ul. Morawskiego 5 in Zwierzyniec, the quarter that runs west from the Old Town toward the Vistula and the Kosciuszko Mound, about fifteen minutes from the Main Square on foot. Four metres of circumference works out at a trunk roughly 127 centimetres across, which is a lot of elm to meet on a residential street anywhere in Europe. Of the continent's native elms, this is the species that the bark beetles carrying Dutch elm disease tend to pass over. Nobody has dated it. No planting record exists, and no comparable dated white elm stands in this city to measure the girth against, so the register's protection year is the oldest fixed point there is.
