What is the oldest tree in Ibiza?
The oldest tree on Ibiza on record is the Pi de Can Reiet, an Aleppo pine at kilometre 1.6 of the road from Santa Eularia des Riu to Sant Joan de Labritja. The Balearic register dates it at 100 to 150 years. It is free to see, visible from the public road, about 20 minutes by car from Ibiza Town.
The official Balearic register gives the tree's trunk diameter as 111 centimetres at the base, which works out to roughly three and a half metres round, and a 2022 island survey of notable trees independently corroborates the species, age band and location. Nobody has narrowed the 100 to 150 year estimate further. The register describes its crown as unbalanced and inclined, which is why the Consell Insular d'Eivissa i Formentera, the island council that owns the tree outright, periodically comes back to take weight out of the branches. A metal plate recording a hunting ban was once fixed to the trunk and has since been removed. It was catalogued as a singular tree on 11 June 1993, one of a short list of individual trees the Balearic government protects by name rather than as part of a wider species or habitat designation. There is no bus stop and no path leading up to it: it is a roadside tree, seen rather than visited at length.
