Quel est l'arbre le plus vieux de Vienna ?

The oldest tree in Vienna is a plane tree tucked into the Fähnrichhof courtyard off Singerstraße in the old town, estimated at more than 280 years old. A 1987 survey already measured its age at over 250 years, and in the centuries since it has grown around part of the iron fence from St Stephen's old cathedral graveyard, closed in the 1730s. It stands a short walk from Stephansplatz, reached through a public passage from Blutgasse.

Vienna's natural monument register, running since 1936, gives an exact protection date for almost every historic tree in the city, but planting dates are rarer, so ages here are mostly expert estimates rather than documented facts. The Singerstraße plane is the exception: a formal 1987 survey put its age at more than 250 years even then, which is about as close to a hard number as Vienna's tree records get, ahead of the ginkgo by the Schubert monument and the Hauptallee's chestnut avenue, both estimated rather than surveyed. It grows in the Fähnrichhof, a courtyard reached through a passage (a Durchhaus, in local terms) connecting Blutgasse and Singerstraße in the first district, a few minutes on foot from Stephansplatz. The tree's most remarkable feature is not visible: part of the iron fence that once enclosed St Stephen's Cathedral's own graveyard, closed to burials in the 1730s, is sealed inside its trunk, absorbed by decades of growth.
