Quel est l'arbre le plus vieux de Leipzig ?

Leipzig has not published tree ages for its Naturdenkmale, only the resolution that protected them: number 601/96, from 1996. What the record shows instead is how unusual the trees themselves are, and where they grow: a bald cypress, a swamp species from the American south, and a Japanese pagoda tree stand in two former villa gardens on Karl-Heine-Strasse in Plagwitz, alongside a European white elm, a copper beech and a female ginkgo, all within about 150 metres of each other. A fern-leaved beech and a pedunculate oak, protected under the same 1996 resolution, stand behind two more villa walls roughly a kilometre east.

Saxony's nature protection law lets a municipality declare an individual tree a Naturdenkmal, its strongest legal protection, without requiring a documented age. Leipzig's own list gives each tree a designation number, a plot reference and the resolution that protects it, which for all seven trees on this page is 601/96, dated 1996: the year is a floor on how long each tree has stood, not a planting date. Three of the seven (the ginkgo, the fern-leaved beech and the oak) are corroborated by Leipzig's own published Naturdenkmal list; the other four (the elm, cypress, copper beech and pagoda tree) rest on the designation record alone and are flagged accordingly. None has a recorded girth either, only the protected root zone the city measured around each trunk. Access varies by tree rather than being uniform: the ginkgo stands at the pavement, the elm and cypress grow in a restored villa's grounds now run as a public gallery, and the other four are visible from their streets but stand behind villa walls this pass could not confirm as open to visitors.
