Quel est l'arbre le plus vieux de Kanazawa ?

The thousand years given for the Shinmeigu zelkova comes from the shrine's own signboard rather than from any measurement of the tree, and the shrine and the tree are not the same thing, so read it as the shrine's claim about its own antiquity. The measurement behind it is solid: 7.8 metres round and 33 metres tall, recorded on the board that marks it as a Kanazawa preserved tree, and it is the thickest zelkova in Ishikawa alongside one at Iikawa Shrine in Nanao. Oddly it is absent from the Environment Ministry's national giant-tree database, which is where most figures on this site come from. None of Kanazawa's other big trees carries a published age at all: neither of the two National Natural Monuments has one, nor does the tabunoki in the graveyard at Hongakuji. The one age that is documented rather than claimed belongs to a young tree, the raised-root pine in Kenrokuen, which tradition says the thirteenth lord planted himself, putting it around 150 years. Getting to Shinmeigu: cross the Saigawa bridge from Korinbo and it is a few minutes on foot.
