The Caucasian Wingnut of Allegade
How do I find it? You can recognise it by the long chains of winged seeds hanging from it in late summer, which nothing else on Allegade produces, and by a single trunk 3.90 metres round. It stands in the park by Allegade 17.
Four metres of trunk on a tree almost nobody in Copenhagen can name. The Caucasian wingnut grows wild in the damp forests between the Black Sea and the Caspian, and it is a walnut relative rather than the ash its leaves suggest. The Danish tree register logged this one at Allegade in 2016: a single stem, 3.90 metres round, 20 metres tall. Wingnuts give themselves away late in the season. From midsummer into September the seeds hang down in long green chains, each one a small nut carrying two papery wings, and a grown tree can drape dozens of those chains at once. Nothing else on this street does anything of the kind. The setting is ordinary Frederiksberg. Allegade runs along the eastern edge of Frederiksberg Have and holds a public rose garden entered from number 20; the wingnut stands in the park by number 17. Whether that plot is the public one or an adjoining private garden is not something our sources settle, so treat the approach as an open question rather than a promise.
