The Pond Oak of Pfaueninsel

The most precise thing known about this oak comes from a stranger's holiday photo. In May 2024 a visitor uploaded a picture of a wide-crowned oak north of the Wasservogelteich, Pfaueninsel's waterfowl pond, and the phone's own GPS placed the tree more accurately than any register description on file. Berlin's protected-tree list already knew it existed, as one of four sessile oaks on the island carrying legal Naturdenkmal status, described only by compass bearing and a rough distance from a landmark. No age is recorded anywhere, and none should be invented, though the island's oak stand generally predates the royal garden built around it from 1793. What the photo confirms is that the tree is alive, healthy and exactly where the register said it should be, with a wide, well-formed crown branching low over the path. It sits far enough from Pfaueninsel's other two documented oaks, roughly a kilometre, that it will not fit into the same five-minute stop, but the whole island is under a kilometre long, an easy single walk that takes in all three. Same ferry, same island, further into it: past the Schloss and toward the pond, where deciduous woodland shelters some of Pfaueninsel's least visited but longest-standing residents.
