The Women's Oak of Viby (Kvindeegen)

Danish women voted for the first time in 1915. The year after, the Viby branch of Dansk Kvindesamfund planted an oak to mark it, on a patch of ground the municipality handed over opposite the entrance to the churchyard. It is still there, and still called Kvindernes Eg, the Women's Oak. It is the youngest tree on this list and the only one planted for a reason anybody bothered to write down. Trees of this kind went in across Denmark after the constitutional change of 5 June 1915, which gave the vote to women and to servants at a stroke. This one has stood through Viby's growth from a parish outside Aarhus into a suburb inside it; the light rail now stops a short walk from the church gate. The national tree register logged it in 2008 as alive and regionally noteworthy, then made a mess of its age. The file says 110 years, and also that the figure applies to 2008, which would put the planting in 1898, eighteen years before it happened. The planting year is the part two independent sources agree on, so count from 1916: about 110 years now, which is roughly the age at which an oak stops reading as a young tree and starts reading as a fixture.
