The Senegal Date Palm of the Jardines de las Delicias

Most palms grow one trunk from one root. Phoenix reclinata grows several, suckering from its base into a clump of curved, leaning stems that can eventually spread wider than they are tall, a habit that gives the species its name and its very different silhouette from the single straight trunks of most cultivated palms. This specimen's base runs 9.70 metres round, and Seville's 2022 survey rated it optimal on every measure: physiology, structure and plant health all clean. It grows in the Jardines de las Delicias, a garden along the old Paseo de las Delicias that predates Parque de María Luisa next door, laid out in the nineteenth century as one of the city's first fashionable promenades. Senegal date palm is native across tropical and subtropical Africa, and it reached Spanish gardens as part of the same nineteenth and early twentieth century enthusiasm for exotic planting that filled Seville's parks with trees from every warm climate on earth.
