The Atlas Cedar of Heemraadspark

Take me thereGet the app

How do I find it? You can recognise it by standing out as a conifer among the canal's planes and lindens, beside the wooden Schietbaanbrug footbridge. It stands on the Heemraadssingel, near number 215B.

Rotterdam's own list of monumental trees calls this Atlas cedar '100+ years old', which would put its planting before 1926. The register that catalogued it individually gives an exact year instead, 1930, within a band of 1930 to 1940, which is both more specific and the number used here, flagged against the city's rounder claim. It stands on municipal land beside the Heemraadssingel canal, near the Schietbaanbrug, a wooden footbridge from 1867 that is itself a listed monument, on the canal's west side near house number 215B. The Heemraadssingel is one of Rotterdam's oldest and best-preserved canals, laid out between roughly 1900 and 1915 as part of a protected cityscape, and today carries about fifty tree species along its banks, mostly planes and lindens. A cedar standing out among them is rare enough to have earned this one its own register entry. Other sources describe a pair of Atlas cedars further along the same canal, near house number 180, which may or may not be the same trees under a different address; this entry covers the specimen at the register's own coordinate, by the footbridge. The canal and its trees are public at all times, no ticket, no gate, just a path along the water.
