Kawazu's oldest and only mapped tree is the great camphor of Sugihokowakenomikoto-jinja, a Cinnamomum camphora standing behind and to the left of the main hall. It measures about fifteen metres round and twenty-four metres tall, and published sources put it at a thousand years or more.
The thousand-year figure for the camphor is tradition rather than a ring count. The girth is not: the Environment Ministry's giant-tree survey recorded fourteen metres in 1990, when the tree ranked nineteenth nationally, and fifteen in 2001. Within Shizuoka it is tied for second. Its trunk has not hollowed, unlike the peninsula's other two famous camphors at Atami and Ito. It was designated a national Natural Monument in 1936, the last of seven great camphors the district was once known for. About six hundred metres away, near the Odoriko Onsen Kaikan bathhouse, the Great Cycad of Shinmachi spreads four thick branches along the ground from a central trunk roughly ten metres tall, unusually tall for a cycad. The whole clump measures 7.76 metres around at the base, the combined mass of stem and limbs rather than one trunk's girth. Tradition places its age from six hundred to over a thousand years; it became a National Natural Monument in 1936, one of only ten individually designated cycads in Japan. Its vigour has declined somewhat in recent years.
