Ralph Allen, the postal reformer and stone quarry owner who financed much of Georgian Bath, began building Prior Park on the hillside above the city in the 1730s, working with the poet Alexander Pope and, in the garden's later stages, Capability Brown. A group of yews planted along the path east of the Sham Bridge, a deliberately ruined-looking stone crossing near the garden's ponds, dates to that original 18th-century design phase rather than any later Victorian replanting, making them contemporaries of the garden's famous Palladian bridge. A second band of yews marks the woodland's northern edge near the dam between the middle and northern ponds. Yew is one of the few species that can genuinely outlast a garden's changing fashions without needing replacement, and these have simply kept growing where Pope and Allen's landscapers first placed them nearly three centuries ago. They now also draw hawfinches, a shy finch rarely seen in Britain, which feed on the yews' seeds through the winter months.
