Wat is de oudste boom van Wroclaw?
Wroclaw's oldest tree is the Dziadek Oak, Grandpa, on ul. Kopernika at the edge of Park Szczytnicki, reported at somewhere between 440 and 460 years old and measured at 652.5 centimetres round in 2019. It is also the most fragile of the four here: the trunk carries serious damage and the branches are reinforced with elastic bindings and steel clamps. Poland's national register records the protection and nothing else, having no column for age or girth anywhere in it, so both the age and the measurements come from a dedicated survey of the monument trees of Wielka Wyspa rather than from the state.
The oaks here are pomniki przyrody, Polish natural monuments; three were designated in one sitting on 16 February 1953, decisions 2/53, 3/53 and 5/53, the fourth in April 1976. That register is why this page is thin on ages: it records species, position and designation date, nothing on age or girth, so every measurement here comes from a dedicated survey of Wielka Wyspa's monument trees, recent enough to report condition as well as size. Two of the four have a reported age; two genuinely do not, and rather than guess, those two ship with girth and height and no number for their years. Worth reading before you go: one oak is hollow, one is braced with clamps, one was struck by lightning, one is healthy. All four oaks stand on public ground within about a kilometre and a half of each other on the island formed by the Oder and its canal, an easy single afternoon on foot. A fifth tree, a plane in the city centre named for standing witness beside the civil registry office, needs a separate stop.
