Wat is de oudste boom van Tamba?
Tamba's oldest mapped tree is Kinone-bashi, a Saw-leaf Zelkova estimated at roughly 1,000 years old, beside Kashiwara Hachiman Shrine. The Kyushaku-fuji of Byakugo-ji, a single wisteria vine trained along a 120-metre trellis, stands in Ichijima, on the other side of Tamba City; nobody has recorded when it was planted.
A root did what no engineer asked it to do: one of Kinone-bashi's roots grew thick enough to span the Okumura River underground, arching about ten metres beneath a riverbed roughly six metres wide. It stands beside the approach to Kashiwara Hachiman Shrine, founded in 1024, at 6.4 metres round, the largest zelkova in Tamba City. Hyogo Prefecture designated it a Natural Monument in 1970, and the city has treated a root-rot fungus there since 2002. It is a short walk from JR Kashiwara Station. The Kyushaku-fuji is a different kind of tree: one wisteria root trained along 120 metres of trellis at Byakugo-ji temple in the Ichijima hills. Kyushaku-fuji, nine-shaku wisteria, is a cultivar name rather than a measurement; the longest recorded flower chain is 180cm. Early May brings a festival with the trellis lit after dark. The last five kilometres from Ichijima Station are an eight-minute taxi ride; entry is 300 yen. The two trees sit 7.5km apart, both on the JR Fukuchiyama Line but different stops.
