The Šilalė Independence Oak, planted in the town centre to mark an anniversary of Lithuania's 1918 declaration of independence, either the tenth or the twentieth depending on which local account you follow. That leaves it 89 to 99 years old, young by the standards of this map but the oldest of the four trees mapped here with a documented basis for an age.
The stones at the foot of the Independence Oak carry a single date, 1918-02-16, but which anniversary it marks is argued over: one account puts the planting in 1937, another in 1927 or 1928. It is 2.4 metres round and 15 metres tall, and stood through the Soviet decades when that date could not be marked. The town made it a heritage object in 2006 and has nursed it against traffic and road salt since 2018. Ninety metres away, thirteen oaks and a lime ring a sculpture, Freedom's Crier: one tree for each of the thirteen men and one woman killed defending the Vilnius television tower on 13 January 1991. These are young trees, planted with the monument in the 1990s, here for what they mean rather than their age. The other two, reached only by car, sit 16 to 18 kilometres out near Kaltinėnai. The Laumenai Oak carries a small chapel where lightning once struck it, and a cave has opened beneath its roots; it is 4.9 metres round. The Pundžiai Oak, 5.6 metres round and 33.5 metres tall, stands in forest behind an old, broken fence. Neither has a published age.
