Wat is de oudste boom van Mallorca?
The oldest tree on this page is the Alzina dels Set Cimals, a holm oak beside the Ma-10 near Lluc that the Balearic register puts at 500 to 600 years. The Alzina d'en Pere, another holm oak a few kilometres away on the public estate at Binifaldo, is given as about 500. On the island as a whole the Set Cimals shares the title with S'Olivera de Cort, the olive in front of Palma's town hall, which carries the same 500 to 600 year estimate and is on the Palma de Mallorca page.
Every tree here comes from the Balearic government's catalogue of singular trees, which gives each entry a height, a trunk measurement and a crown, and an age only where somebody has been willing to estimate one. Four of the six have an age band and two have none. The two holm oaks near Lluc are the oldest, at 500 to 600 years for the Set Cimals and about 500 for the Alzina d'en Pere, and both are estimates rather than ring counts. The hackberry at Lluc is put at 150 to 350 years, a wide band that comes from old photographs already showing it at today's size a century ago. The stone pine at Sa Pedrissa is given 100 to 200. The hackberry at Montuiri and the Aleppo pine at Marratxí have no age at all; local reporting has the Montuiri tree at the cemetery gate since at least the early 1900s, and nobody has dated the pine. The Set Cimals lost three of its seven limbs to bark beetle and snow after 1999, and the register records real decline. Getting there: the three Lluc trees are about 50 minutes by car north of Palma.
