Wat is de oudste boom van Krakow?
Krakow's oldest tree is the Henryk Oak in Borek Falecki, roughly 240 to 250 years old, beside ul. Zakopianska about six kilometres south of the Old Town. It is named after Henryk Bartyzel, the neighbour who kept it from being felled for most of the 20th century. That crown rests on the best evidence anyone has rather than on a settled measurement: the ages of the big protected trees on the Planty ring are calculated from trunk girth rather than read from records, and on girth alone the plane by the Philharmonic could be older.
The Henryk Oak is the last living fragment of a pine-and-oak forest that once covered the village of Borek, on Krakow's southern edge, the same wood that gave the settlement its name, bor being an old Polish word for pine forest. It became a roadside tree in 1790, not long after Poland's first partition, when Austrian authorities drove the new highway from Vienna to Lwow through the old stand. For most of the 20th century one man kept it standing: Henryk Bartyzel lived beside the tree from 1923 until 2010, intervening when occupation authorities ordered it felled during the Second World War and again through decades of routine road works. A civic council named the tree in his honour the year he died, in 2017 more than 90 volunteers restored the ground around its base, and the following year it went into Poland's national Tree of the Year contest. One caveat belongs with the ranking. This oak is among the few trees in the city anyone has put a number on. The protected veterans on the Planty ring carry ages worked out from trunk girth, and two of them have no age at all.
