The Ruxton Liberty Tree's age comes from a documented use as a surveyor's boundary marker in 1694, which means it was already substantial enough to serve that role only 48 years after the first English colonists reached Maryland, and from the girth of its trunk today, 5.49 metres round under a canopy roughly 150 feet across. Keeping it alive costs real money and effort: the family who own the lawn it grows on pay for 5,000 gallons of water a week and for fungicide treatments against a root disease working at its base. Baltimore's other old trees are younger and thinner on the record. The Frederick Douglass Elm near Camden Yards carries no documented age at all, only a local tradition that Douglass planted it as a child while enslaved in the city and returned to speak beneath it in 1878 as a free man, alongside TreeBaltimore's own listing of it as a notable specimen. Two more, a state-champion hawthorn and a city-champion paperbark maple, grow in the city's own Cylburn Arboretum; neither has a published age, since Maryland's champion registers measure trunk size and crown spread rather than years.
