The oldest tree in Bad Homburg with a documented date is the larger of the two cedars in front of the palace's royal wing, planted in 1822 from seed that came out of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, now 6.40 metres round and called by the city the thickest and oldest of its kind in Germany. It is very probably not the oldest tree in the park. Two pedunculate oaks, 5.39 metres at the bridge and 4.94 metres by the lake, and a plane of 5.66 metres near the wingnuts, have never been dated by anyone. All of them stand in the Schlosspark, which is free to walk through.
The honest answer here is a gap. The cedar is the only tree in the park with a year on it, because somebody wrote down when it was planted. The three wider trunks have no recorded age at all, and a girth of five metres on an oak or a plane would ordinarily mean a tree considerably older than two centuries. Joining the park's own dates to them would be guesswork: a garden is recorded beside the castle from 1441, a baroque garden was laid out from 1680, and the grounds were remade as an English landscape park a century later, but no source connects any phase to a particular tree. The measurements come from a 2021 survey by the dendrologist Rainer Lippert on baumkunde.de. The cedar's figures come from the city and from baumkunde's register, which disagree about the species, the city calling it an Atlas cedar and the register a cedar of Lebanon. A reader sent us the Schlosspark oak at about five metres round, which falls between the two oaks in that survey, so both are on the map rather than one being picked on a guess.
