The Crimean Linden of Blokhuisplein

You walk past this lime to get into the public library, and you do it through the gate of the old prison. The Blokhuispoort is Leeuwarden's jail, brick wings and barred windows, out of that use and now holding the library, a cultural venue and shops. The Crimean lime stands to the left of the entrance. The city's own monumental-green walking route dates it to 1954 and counts it among the ten trees it considers Leeuwarden's most remarkable, which it manages while being younger than most of the trees it shares that list with. Tilia x euchlora is not the lime you usually meet on a Dutch street. It is a hybrid with darker, glossier leaves than the common lime, and part of the reason planners choose it is that it spares the pavement below the sticky honeydew rain that falls from a common lime in summer. In front of a public building on a square full of terrace seating, that is not an accident. One caution about the pin. The only source carrying this tree is the brochure, which places it left of the Blokhuispoort entrance, and our coordinate is the geocoded centre of Blokhuisplein rather than the trunk.
