The oldest tree in Yosemite National Park's Mariposa Grove is the Grizzly Giant, dated at roughly 2,995 years, give or take 250, by the estimate cited on Wikipedia; the National Park Service simply calls it the 3,000-year-old Grizzly Giant. More than four fifths of its bark and sapwood has burned away over the centuries and it is still alive, leaning about five and a half metres off vertical. It anchors the Grizzly Giant Loop Trail, a mile from the grove's Arrival Area, reached by a free seasonal shuttle or on foot. None of the grove's other four mapped trees, all sequoias with their own oddities of fire, fusion or old engineering, has a published age.
Mariposa Grove is Yosemite's largest sequoia grove and the most visited, reached by a free seasonal shuttle from the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza to an Arrival Area, or a longer hike when the shuttle is not running. Entrance to Yosemite National Park is paid at the gate; the grove itself asks nothing more. The lower loop, about 1.6 kilometres from the Arrival Area, passes the Grizzly Giant, the California Tunnel Tree, cut through in 1895 for horse-drawn stages and the last such tunnel tree standing anywhere, and the Bachelor and Three Graces, four sequoias with roots so intertwined that one falling could bring down the rest. The upper grove, reached on a longer loop of around eleven kilometres round trip, holds the Faithful Couple, two trunks fused into one base, and the Clothespin Tree, opened by repeated fire into an archway wide enough to be seen from fifty yards off. None of the four besides the Grizzly Giant has a published height, girth or age; if you have measured one, tell us.
