Sydney is a young city for trees and an honest answer says so. Everything datable here was planted by colonists in the middle of the nineteenth century, which puts the oldest at not quite two hundred years, and the trees that people talk about most are younger still. The jacaranda in the University of Sydney Quadrangle is famous enough to appear in graduation photographs and superstition, and the tree standing there today is a clone planted in 2017 after the 1928 original died the year before. The Botanic Garden's Wishing Tree carries a plaque saying outright that it will never match the tree it replaced, a Norfolk Island pine from around 1816 that died in 1945. Neither belongs on a list of old trees under any other description, and both are here because the place itself is worth standing in. The genuinely old ones are the figs. Camperdown Cemetery's dates from 1848, Vaucluse House's Port Jackson fig from the 1850s, and a fig on a Woolwich verge was dated to about 1900 by a council officer reading old photographs. The Bland Oak at Carramar beats all of them on paper, planted in 1842 and documented as such.
